Prof. Andreas Birkenfeld
Andreas Birkenfeld is Professor of Diabetology, Endocrinology and Nephrology at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. He is director of the Department of Medicine VI and the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of Helmholtz Munich at the University Hospital Tübingen and he is one of the spokespersons of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD e.V.).
He received his medical degree from the Charité – University School of Medicine Berlin and was a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University in the laboratory of Gerald Shulman.
His research focuses on the prevention of type 2 diabetes, metabolic precision medicine, and the identification of novel targets for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, particularly in the liver and the central nervous system.
