EASD’s Commitment to Transforming Diabetes Care Through Learning

Education is the foundation of progress, especially in healthcare, where knowledge empowers professionals to innovate and improve patient outcomes. On this International Day of Education, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) celebrates the transformative power of learning and reaffirms its commitment to advancing global diabetes care through education.

A recent example of our dedication is the EASD in China Summit 2025, held on January 11, 2025, in Beijing, China and online. This event, co-chaired by Prof. Linong Ji (Peking University People's Hospital) and Prof. Liming Chen (Tianjin Medical University), celebrated the partnership between EASD and China, demonstrating how education fosters collaboration, drives innovation, and equips healthcare professionals (HCPs) with the tools to address the growing challenges of diabetes care.

A Milestone in Diabetes Education: Distinguished Speakers and Key Highlights

The EASD in China Summit 2025 highlighted the importance of education in shaping the future of diabetes care. By combining in-person and virtual platforms, the summit provided a rich, cross-border academic experience, bringing together experts from around the world to share insights, research, and best practices.

The summit’s agenda focused on diabetes and its comorbidities with heart and kidney diseases – an area of growing concern globally – with a spotlight on the latest research and guidelines. Prof. Julian Mader, Chair of the EASD Training and Education Committee, presented highlights from the 2024 EASD Annual Meeting, emphasizing the role of cardiorenal metabolism in managing type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Experts emphasized the importance of early intervention and comprehensive care strategies, underscoring how education empowers HCPs to deliver better outcomes for patients. Finnish nephrology expert Prof. Per-Henrik Groop shared findings from the groundbreaking FLOW trial, showcasing the potential of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) in treating kidney disease. Prof. Hindrik Mulder, Editor-in-Chief of Diabetologia, also delivered a masterclass on publishing in high-impact journals, empowering researchers to elevate their work and contribute to the global body of diabetes knowledge. From Peking University Third Hospital, Prof. Tianpei Hong provided a comprehensive review of the latest academic advancements in metabolic burden management incl. innovations in diabetes screening, new treatment concepts, and emerging technologies from 2024, while the panel explored the evolving role of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) in diabetes guidelines.

Through these discussions, the summit underscored how education equips HCPs with the latest advancements to improve patient outcomes and shape the future of diabetes care, while ensuring HCPs stay at the forefront of modern diabetology.

Education: A Catalyst for Collaboration

The EASD in China Summit shows how education bridges borders and disciplines. This collaboration not only fostered academic exchange but also aligned global expertise with local clinical practices to address unique challenges in diabetes care.

In his closing remarks, co-chair of the summit, Prof. Linong Ji reflected:

"Today’s summit celebrated the collaboration between China and Europe in diabetes research. By revisiting key moments from the EASD Annual Meeting and exploring international breakthroughs grounded in Chinese clinical practice, we sparked valuable interdisciplinary ideas for advancing diabetes management. Together, we look forward to deeper cooperation and groundbreaking achievements."
